Custom his and hers walk-in closets gave this newly built Bethesda, MD home refined storage, everyday convenience, and a design that feels built into the architecture from the very start.

This project started with a clear goal: design and install two custom walk-in closets for a new build in Bethesda, Maryland that felt every bit as intentional as the rest of the residence. The homeowners needed his-and-hers spaces that could support different daily routines, keep a wide range of items organized, and still maintain a cohesive, elevated look from one area to the next.

That meant our team had to do more than add storage. We had to make the layout feel fully integrated within the home’s architecture, maximize the available footprint, and use every section of the room wisely, including the area beneath the windows. We also needed to coordinate select finishing elements from outside vendors, including stone marble countertops and a floor-to-ceiling mirror, so the final installation would feel seamless instead of pieced together.

We approached this project as a fully integrated storage solution, designed around daily function and long-term flexibility. Within roughly 205.6 square feet, we built a bright, organized layout using furniture-grade melamine (also known as thermally fused laminate or TFL), with tall slim shaker-style doors in white, matching top cabinets with push-to-open latches, and soft-close doors and drawers throughout. Black button-style hardware added subtle contrast while keeping the overall look clean and timeless.

To improve storage performance, we designed a central island with a mix of shallow and deep drawers so the homeowners could organize everything from smaller personal items to larger wardrobe essentials. A tilt-out hamper added convenience without disrupting the room’s streamlined appearance, while adjustable open shelving gave the space room to adapt over time. We also used the space below one of the windows as a dedicated countertop with integrated drawer storage, creating a practical zone for getting ready each day.

To elevate the finished custom closet design even further, we carefully integrated elegant stone marble countertops from an outside vendor into our system and installed a floor-to-ceiling mirror from Chevy Chase Glass Company on the front of one cabinet. Lighted shelves and the layered mix of closed storage, open display space, and functional work surfaces helped us deliver a walk-in closet that feels both luxurious and highly usable for this Bethesda, MD home.

The finished result is a walk-in closet that feels open, intuitive, and tailored to the homeowners’ routines. What began as a design challenge centered on balancing storage types, visual consistency, and architectural integration became a polished space with clear zones for dressing, organizing, and everyday use. The large island anchors the room, the built-ins maximize the wall space, and the vanity area under the window adds a thoughtful finishing touch.
